New Years Day Dragon and Lion Extravaganza

We normally kick off the year with an array of fantastic and colorful events, with the Lion and Dragon Dance Festival and Extravaganza welcoming the new year on January 1st. But these are anything but normal times and our usual repertoire of fantastic events is thinning out. As Covid-19 continues to present many challenges, the status of the various scheduled events may change at the last minute, some may be held in slightly different formats and of course adhering to any measures in effect at the time.

The Winterfest and Christmas celebrations will be wrapping up the first week of the month and after a subdued holiday season, preparations for the most revered event in the calendar, Chinese New Year will be getting underway in anticipation of the big day on February 12, 2021. Celebrations this year, however, are likely to be limited in scale.

Luckily January is a great month for enjoying the outdoors, for nature lovers, this is the time to visit our fantastic reserves and trails. Weather is pleasant and migrating birds are here in spades.

Happy Valley Horse Races

The horse races in Hong Kong whether or not you are a horse racing enthusiast is an experience not to be missed!

The beautiful horses, the skillful jockeys, the crowds going wild, they all add up to an exciting, fun-filled, thrilling atmosphere in two world-class venues, at the Sha Tin Racecourse and the iconic Happy Valley Racecourse.

The Happy Valley race course itself is a sight in itself, the city has built around it through the years and it is now practically surrounded by skyscrapers, an awesome experience specially at night when the city is illuminated.

At this time, due to the ongoing Covid-19 measures, THE RACES ARE RUNNING WITHOUT PUBLIC ATTENDANCE. The Hong Kong Jockey Club however obtains permission by the Government to organise attendance with certain conditions for race meetings at both Happy Valley and Sha Tin, for example members of the general public can attend by making a booking at one of the course venues following the prescribed measures. This might vary depending on restrictions and curfews in effect at a particular race day. Here are the latest arrangements.

When?: Happy Valley Night Races on Wednesday Nights. On race day, first race starts at 7:15 p.m. and the gates open at 5:15 p.m. The races are done by 11:00 p.m. For now "Happy Wednesdays" are being conducted online due to the Coronavirus measures. Once the restrictions are over, the on course experience will return.
Sha Tin Day Races are on Sundays. First race normally starts at 1:00 pm, earlier if there are more than 10 races. Gates open at 11:00 am.
All races will be streamed live at the HK Jockey Club Racing Channel.
